CRIME PREVENTION INDIVIDUAL

The Mayor Hazel McCallion Award

Nomination Criteria: This award is given to an individual of the community that meets one of the following criteria:

  • Crime prevention champion
  • Individual offering a lifetime contribution and commitment to crime prevention in Mississauga
  • Individual having made an extraordinary single contribution to crime prevention in Mississauga

  • In 2010 this award was named in honor of our long standing Mayor Hazel McCallion for her role and continued support to the Mississauga community and for her long term vision that a Safe City is a Great City. Madam Mayor has supported the efforts of Safe City Mississauga, formerly MCPA, since 1992 and was instrumental in leading a renewed vision of crime prevention in 2007 with the transition of MCPA to Safe City Mississauga. Madam Mayor recognizes and encourages each and everyone to make a contribution towards preventing crime and keeping our Mississauga a safe city to work, live, learn and play.

    CRIME PREVENTION PRACTITIONER

    The Chief Mike Metcalf Award

    Nomination Criteria: This award is given to a Peel Police Officer or other designated Crime Prevention Practitioner that meets one of the following criteria:

  • Crime Prevention Practitioner
  • Officer offering a lifetime contribution and commitment to crime prevention in Mississauga
  • Officer having made an extraordinary single contribution to crime prevention in Mississauga

  • In 2010 the award was named in honor of the longtime serving Officer and current Chief of Peel Regional Police, Michael Metcalf. Chief Metcalf’s service and commitment to safety, prevention and community is clear in his action, words and deeds.

    CRIME PREVENTION YOUTH

    The Bell Canada Award

    Nomination Criteria: This award is presented to an outstanding young person under the age of 18 that meets one of the following criteria:

  • Youth

  • Youth having made an extraordinary contribution to crime prevention in Mississauga


  • The Bell Canada Award will be presented to an outstanding young person who is instrumental in finding ways to contribute to crime prevention amongst their peers or in their community.

    Examples include: Messages shared with their schools, peers and communities, in which they inspire others to turn their ideas into action by developing youth-led crime prevention community projects. The projects may include producing crime prevention informational pieces, creating a crime free youth council that work with school boards, creating youth advocacy groups to address the roots of youth violence, designing crime prevention awareness conferences and camps, programs having the potential to generate the ripple effect and change lives, attitudes and community. Programs that reach out to develop skills as leaders, mentors, and positive role models creating an overall positive impact on the youth, the schools, the community and which ultimately prevent crime.

    CRIME PREVENTION BUSINESS

    The Harold G. Shipp Award

    Nomination Criteria: This award is presented to an outstanding local business that meets one of the following criteria:

  • Business offering a lifetime contribution and commitment to crime prevention in Mississauga

  • Business having made an extraordinary single contribution to crime prevention in Mississauga


  • The Business Award will be presented to a business that has made crime prevention and awareness a priority through policy and practice incorporating best practices in their organization, supporting innovative and successful crime prevention educational and intervention programs, provides marketing campaigns on crime prevention or other leadership demonstration in crime prevention.

    CRIME PREVENTION COMMUNITY SERVICE

    The Ignat “Iggy” Kaneff Award

    Nomination Criteria: This award is presented to an outstanding local Community Service organization, civic or service club that meets one of the following criteria:

  • Community Service organization, civic or service club offering a lifetime contribution and commitment to crime prevention in Mississauga

  • Community Service organization, civic or service club having made an extraordinary single contribution to crime prevention in Mississauga


  • The Community Service Award will be presented to a local group that supports crime prevention initiatives through fundraising, volunteering, or as ambassadors for the purpose of reducing or preventing crime and thereby improving the quality of life for students, communities, or seniors.

    CRIME PREVENTION VOLUNTEER

    The Ron Lenyk Award

    Nomination Criteria: This award is presented to an outstanding local volunteer that meets one of the following criteria:

  • Volunteer offering a lifetime contribution and commitment to crime prevention in Mississauga

  • Volunteer having made an extraordinary single contribution to crime prevention in Mississauga


  • The Volunteer Award will be presented to an outstanding community volunteer that actively promotes crime prevention through actions such as delivering crime prevention education programs, assisting seniors to enhance the safety and well being of their quality of life. Through identifying a need and encouraging others to act on an idea that helps protect individuals, home, property or the community, or through the dissemination of crime prevention techniques.
    Consideration will be given to individuals that have also implemented other crime prevention strategies through the community, innovative thinkers who are dedicated to creating safer communities through education and collaborative efforts between the community and the police; individuals who volunteer their time to reduce theft, vandalism; prostitution, drugs, and any other crime in their neighborhood, rallies other volunteers, residents and businesses to take action by mobilizing groups like neighborhood watches and who may also advocate for the development of positive alternative activities for youth and the community.
